Verdun unfolds on the Western Front between 1914 and 1918, drawing inspiration from the infamous Battle of Verdun in 1916, one of the bloodiest conflicts in world history. As the first multiplayer FPS set in a realistic World War One setting, it launched the wider WW1 Game series and captures the vicious close-quarters reality of trench warfare, where skill with a bayonet can matter as much as steady aim with a rifle.
The game delivers five distinct modes alongside many historically accurate touches, from realistic period weaponry with true bullet physics to authentic uniforms, horrendous gore and maps based on the real battlefields of France and Belgium. Its dynamic Frontlines mode sends 64 players taking turns to go over the top in an attempt to seize the opposing trench line, capturing the momentum-based push and counter-push of the era. Poisonous gas brings a claustrophobic gas-mask experience, and ferocious artillery barrages punctuate the fighting.
Squad play sits at its heart, with fifteen distinctive squad types representing soldiers from five or more countries, each carrying their own weapons and equipment. Combining action, indie, MMO, simulation and strategy on PC, it steeps players in the authentic music, style and grim atmosphere of the Western Front.
