Total War: WARHAMMER II builds its campaign around the Great Vortex, a vast arcane maelstrom forged millennia ago by a conclave of High Elf mages to drain the Winds of Magic from the world and blast the Daemonic hordes back to the Realm of Chaos. Now that vortex falters, and the world stands once more at the brink of ruin as powerful forces move either to heal it or to seize its terrible energies for their own ends.

The action-strategy game frames the struggle around four playable races, each pursuing its own outcome toward a single goal, control of the Great Vortex for good or ill. Prince Tyrion guides the High Elves in their desperate bid to stabilise the maelstrom above their home continent, while the Slann Mage-Priest Mazdamundi directs Lizardmen war-hosts surging north from Lustria to prevent cataclysm by the methods of the Old Ones. The Witch King Malekith and his sadistic Dark Elves pour forth from Naggaroth to exploit the vortex's weakness, and a fourth, secretive race stirs with hidden motives. On PC, the second entry in the trilogy turns this contest into a race whose victor decides the fate of the world.
