Subnautica: Below Zero carries the underwater survival series into frozen territory, opening a fresh chapter in the world Unknown Worlds first explored. You return to Planet 4546B, this time to its arctic reaches, arriving with barely more than your wits and a scattering of survival gear. Your reason for coming is personal: you have set out to learn what happened to your sister, and Alterra's hasty departure after a mysterious incident has left plenty of unanswered questions behind.
Abandoned research stations litter the ice, their logs, databanks, and stray belongings slowly assembling a fuller account of what went wrong here. With resources thin, improvisation becomes second nature. The region rewards exploration with genuinely new sights, from the blue-lit arches of the Twisty Bridges and the enormous crystals of the Crystal Caverns to snow-capped peaks, glacial caves, and steaming thermal vents that guard ancient alien artifacts.
As with earlier entries in this indie adventure, survival leans on construction and craft. You raise sprawling habitats to shelter from the brutal cold, gather materials, and fabricate the tools you need to press on. Overland travel gets a boost from the Snowfox hoverbike, while modular vehicles let you cruise through beautiful and dangerous biomes alike. On PC it stands comfortably on its own, whether or not you played the original.
