SteamWorld Build combines city-building and management simulation with a strategy layer set in a charming steam-powered world inspired by the Old West. The planet is dying, and it is dig or die trying: your task is to homestead one final landrush, rounding up the posse, circling the wagons, and building a new town while chasing rumours of ancient tech buried in the mine beneath it. On PC it pairs bustling surface construction with a very different world underground.
Above ground, the focus is on management. As your borders expand, new steamfolk arrive, and every bot is crotchety in its own way, so it falls to you to keep them steaming along, bartering to boost efficiency, keeping goods flowing to and from the mines, and maintaining everyone's happiness so they work their hardest. Attracting wealthy bots helps you build bigger and edge closer to escape.
Below ground, things turn tense. You dig deep in search of riches and ancient technologies, but something down there does not want to share, so you must arm your miners, dig gravel, keep the tunnels from collapsing, and defend against the creepy varmints that lurk in the dark. The result is a two-tiered loop of surface city management and subterranean exploration and defense, wrapped in the series' signature SteamWorld charm and built to reward careful planning on both fronts.
