About RimWorld

RimWorld poster

RimWorld is a sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. It follows three survivors of a crashed space liner as they build a colony on a frontier world at the rim of known space, drawing inspiration from the space-western vibe of Firefly, the deep simulation of Dwarf Fortress, and the epic scale of Dune and Warhammer 40,000. As an indie strategy and simulation title, it's less about winning and more about the stories that emerge.

At its core, RimWorld is a story generator designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant tales of imprisoned pirates, desperate colonists, starvation, and survival. It works by controlling the random events the world throws at you, so every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and traveling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. You can pick from several storytellers, including chaotic Randy Random, tension-building Cassandra Classic, and laid-back Phoebe Chillax.

Your colonists are crash-landed survivors rather than trained settlers, so you might end up shepherding a nobleman, an accountant, and a housewife, and you'll gain more by capturing enemies in combat, buying them from slave traders, or taking in refugees. Each person's background is tracked and shapes how they play, ensuring your colony is always a motley, memorable crew on PC.
