About Recompile

Recompile poster

Recompile is an atmospheric action-adventure that unfolds entirely inside a sprawling digital world, casting you as a fledgling program on the cusp of becoming truly sapient. Blending Metroidvania-style progression with non-linear exploration, this indie title asks you to explore, battle, and hack your way through the ruins of an ancient Mainframe. One striking conceit frames the whole experience: the game's narrative is set to take place within a single second of real time, giving the story a compressed, urgent quality.

Exploration rewards curiosity, with a growing set of traversal abilities helping you descend deeper into the ancient architecture and edge closer to genuine consciousness. Along the way you repair systems, recover lost data, and piece together the truth about the Hypervisor and the Mainframe's original purpose. Because your choices carry weight, the game branches toward multiple endings depending on how you handle its inhabitants and mysteries.

Many of those inhabitants are hostile, so a full arsenal of weapons and abilities lets you defend yourself and clear a path. The hacking layer is where Recompile stands apart on PC: doors, forcefields, elevators, and even enemy spawners run on interconnected logic-gate circuitry. Nothing is hardcoded, so you can invert and revert gates freely, turning tough obstacles into puzzles you can safely bypass.
