About Prison Architect

Prison Architect poster

Prison Architect casts you as a warden ruthless enough to contain the world's most dangerous inmates, tasking you with designing and developing a personalized penitentiary. This simulation and strategy game revolves around customized confinement, asking you to allocate resources to optimize your compound while being careful not to restrict the flow of the crowd, lest you trigger a flood, fire, fight, or full-blown riot. Balancing efficiency against safety becomes a constant, high-stakes puzzle.

Running a prison means juggling many systems at once. You can tap federal money through grant applications and direct those funds toward combating disease, gang activity, and litigation, while staffing your facility with armed guards, psychologists, doctors, lawyers, and snitches to keep it mostly ethical and safe. Each prisoner's criminal history calls for custom treatment programs, labor schedules, and reform workshops, adding depth to the management. The game also offers plenty of ways to test your creations, letting you attempt a high-stakes escape of your own supermax in Escape Mode, try Online mode against one of twelve thousand player-created prisons, or expand endlessly in Sandbox mode. As an indie title on PC, it turns institutional management into an engrossing challenge.
