Phantom Abyss is a massive asynchronous multiplayer game that casts you into procedurally-generated temples in search of the sacred relics hidden within their deadly chambers. Intrepid adventurers dodge scores of hidden traps, leap treacherous chasms and flee relentless guardians through branching paths until they either claim a relic or the devices of death overwhelm them. The catch is unforgiving: you get only one attempt at each temple, and failure or settling for a lesser relic means you will never see that temple again.
The cleverest players turn other people's failures into an advantage. As you explore a temple's perilous halls and colossal rooms, you run alongside the phantoms of fallen adventurers who came before, watching and learning from the mistakes of up to 20 of them, including your Steam friends who attempted the same temple. You can even steal their whips as they fall, using every scrap of borrowed knowledge to push deeper than they ever managed.
Progress means unlocking more treacherous floors by recovering keys from chests, opening up deeper and deadlier sections of the temple that guard more coveted rewards. Once the legendary relic at the bottom is finally found, the temple vanishes forever and becomes the priceless trophy of the skilled adventurer. As an indie action-adventure with platforming and MMO-style social elements on PC, it thrives on that blend of risk, learning and permanence.
