GoNNER is a challenging indie action game that promises you will die a lot, but insists this is by design rather than unfair punishment. You are meant to gradually get the hang of it, and even when you lose your head there is no need to panic, because the game keeps plenty of replacement heads on hand. That mix of tough, deadly play and self-aware humour sets the tone for its procedurally generated worlds.
Every time you play, the levels are different, presenting unique challenges and opportunities so no two runs feel the same. At the start of each attempt you choose from passive and active abilities, and you are encouraged to experiment to find the play style that suits you best. Hidden throughout the world are secret areas the game refuses to explain, keeping their locations and unlock conditions a mystery, that reward you with items usable from the start of future runs.
Additional layers keep things fresh, including once-a-day Daily Challenges where everyone plays the same randomly generated world with an identical loadout, resetting at midnight Swedish time, plus leaderboards for kills, combos and points to brag about. Backed by music the developers are proud of, this fast, roguelike-flavoured action title is a stylish test of skill for PC players.
