About Empires of the Undergrowth

Empires of the Undergrowth poster

Empires of the Undergrowth is a simulation and strategy game that puts the real-time strategy genre under the microscope, letting you forge an empire in the world of ants. You build extensive nests, manage an intricate hierarchy and command a variety of warrior ant species through intense battles, all while supplying an ever-expanding base and protecting your queen at any cost amid the unique threats and opportunities of the insect world.

Everything grows outward from a central room housing your queen. You order workers to dig through a hex-based maze of soil and bedrock, developing and optimizing a sprawling network of store rooms, nurseries and hallways while seeking food and fending off other underground dwellers. The action can be frantic, with hundreds of warriors clashing amid gnashing mandibles as formic acid fires overhead and workers rush home at nightfall to keep reinforcements hatching.

Survival means looking beyond the nest, too. Pushing to the surface reveals seeds, nectar, fungus, other insects and even amphibians on the menu, but each food source carries its own strategic tradeoffs and dangers, from ladybugs to larger predators. For PC strategy fans intrigued by an unconventional setting, Empires of the Undergrowth turns colony management and tactical combat into a compelling, small-scale war for survival.
