Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc unfolds at Hope's Peak Academy, a school meant to nurture Japan's most gifted high schoolers as beacons of hope for the future. That hope collapses when Makoto Naegi and his classmates discover they are imprisoned inside the building, sealed off from the outside world and left at the mercy of a strange, murderous little bear named Monokuma, who offers freedom to any student willing to kill a classmate and escape suspicion.

This adventure and puzzle title challenges players to uncover who Monokuma really is and why they have been torn from the life they knew, all while warning that few things are as deadly as the truth. Its Daily Life and Deadly Life structure traps students in a school-turned-prison where murders occur one after another, tasking players with investigating each incident, hunting for clues, and questioning classmates to get to the bottom of every brutal case.

The drama peaks in the Mock Trials, where Monokuma acts as judge, jury, and executioner while players engage in deadly wordplay, dissecting suspects' statements and firing their own words back to expose lies. A popularity contest layer encourages players to win classmates over during investigations, squeezing out information and then leaning on timing and reflex-based systems to reveal the truth and save themselves from execution.
