If you only compare screenshots, Tiles Survive and Whiteout Survival look like cousins: both cast you as the "Chief" of a huddle of survivors, both ask you to assign jobs, upgrade a base and grind toward alliance warfare. The difference is the layer that sits on top of that survival loop, and the fact that one of these games is a proven billion-dollar juggernaut while the other is barely a year old.
Gameplay & combat
Whiteout Survival, from Century Games, is a fairly classic 4X wrapped in a frozen-apocalypse skin. You allocate survivors as hunters, cooks and woodcutters, raise building timers, march troops on a shared world map and let hero rally-calls decide battles. Tiles Survive keeps that management spine but grafts on a genuinely different exploration hook: instead of one static kingdom map, you push outward tile by tile, clearing fog to reveal new biomes, and each uncovered tile is a small decision, harvest, fight a local zombie pack, or rescue survivors. It is the more novel moment-to-moment game; Whiteout is the more polished, better-balanced one.
Progression & monetisation
Whiteout's reputation is well documented. It reportedly crossed $1.5 billion in revenue by early 2025, and it earns that through a slick but ruthless funnel: generous speed-ups and gems early, then a treadmill of new hero "Generations" every few months that quietly retires your maxed-out veterans, all pushed by limited-time offers, red-dot notifications and alliance social pressure. Tiles Survive follows the same commercial template, alliance events and competitive brackets openly reward spenders (community fairness estimates hover around 5/10), but it has not yet demonstrated the same long-term power-creep discipline.
- Pick Whiteout if: you want the genre's most refined, content-dense version, a huge active population and years of proven live-ops.
- Pick Tiles Survive if: the fog-clearing tile exploration appeals more than another identical city grid, and you want to get in near the ground floor.
- Watch out: Tiles Survive is notorious for misleading ads, its actual game is a base-builder, not the action puzzler the ads imply.
Content & endgame
Here Whiteout's maturity shows. Its State-versus-State politics, World Boss rotations, NAP diplomacy and Discord metagame give the endgame real texture, and there is simply more of it. Tiles Survive's PvE, its tile chapters, shelter building and hero collecting, is enjoyable and fully playable for free, but the competitive endgame is thinner and less battle-tested.
Which should you play?
For most players Whiteout Survival is the safer recommendation: it is deeper, more populated and more predictable. Tiles Survive is the more interesting experiment, its tile-exploration idea is the freshest thing in the sub-genre, but with a 4.4 store rating dragged down by retention problems and ad complaints, treat it as promising rather than proven.
