NTE vs Wuthering Waves

These two are the go-to picks for the 'anti-Genshin' action crowd that wants faster combat and a more generous gacha. Wuthering Waves is the combat purist's open-world gacha; NTE is the sandbox-variety one.

NTE vs Wuthering Waves
AspectNTEWuthering WavesEdge
CombatResponsive swap combat with parries and chain reactions, but repeatedly criticized for a low combo ceiling that drifts into button-mashing.Lightning-fast dodge/parry action with deep Echo builds and arguably the highest skill ceiling among open-world gachas.Wuthering Waves
Open world / explorationAn urban sandbox packed with driving, jobs, property and GTA-style systems on top of exploration.A large natural, post-apocalyptic world with slick traversal (wall-running, grappling) but far fewer non-combat activities.NTE
Gacha & generosityNo character 50/50 (the featured S-rank is guaranteed) and only a handful of weapons ever go through gacha.Still runs a character 50/50, but offsets it with a 100% guaranteed weapon banner.NTE
PC performance & optimisationDemanding UE5 build, DLSS-only, and heavy enough to struggle even on high-end rigs.Had a rough launch but is now reasonably optimised across both PC and mobile.Wuthering Waves
Story & charactersA strong-opening mystery that dips in the middle before recovering.Launched with a weak, widely-panned story that Kuro has substantially rewritten and improved since.Tie
Art style / settingModern urban-fantasy city with a grounded, realistic lean.Post-apocalyptic wasteland blended with sci-fi anime stylings.Tie
MonetisationPositions itself as the more generous option, leaning further than WuWa thanks to guaranteed units.More generous than HoYoverse titles, but still monetises the character banner and battle pass.NTE

Wuthering Waves and Neverness to Everness are both pitched at players who found Genshin's combat too slow, but they solve that itch in different registers. WuWa, from Kuro Games, is a post-apocalyptic fantasy open world; NTE is an urban-fantasy sandbox set in the metropolis of Hethereau. Both launched into intense scrutiny, and both carry the baggage of studios trying to prove themselves.

Gameplay & combat

Combat is where the community consensus is clearest: Wuthering Waves is usually rated the better pure action game. Its dodge-counter system, tight parry windows, Echo-swapping and Concerto/Resonance rhythm reward mechanical skill and give encounters a fast, aggressive flow. NTE's Esper-based combat also has perfect dodges and parries, but it leans more on team composition and elemental-class synergy than on the split-second execution WuWa demands. Where NTE answers back is outside of fighting. WuWa's traversal is excellent (wall-running, grappling, fluid climbing), but it is still a fairly conventional exploration loop. NTE layers on drivable vehicles, a wanted/crime system, property ownership and business-building, giving it a sandbox breadth WuWa doesn't attempt.

Progression & monetisation

Both are more generous than Genshin, but NTE goes further on paper. Wuthering Waves keeps a 50/50 limited banner (with a guaranteed featured five-star on the next pity) and a separate weapon banner, though its pity is capped lower than Genshin's. NTE scraps the 50/50 outright, guarantees the featured S-Class on any S-Class pull, caps pity at 90, and ships with no weapon banner plus a very large launch pull economy.

  • Combat depth: WuWa for demanding action; NTE for team-building and sandbox variety.
  • Gacha: NTE removes the 50/50 and weapon banner; WuWa keeps both but is still comparatively fair.

Content & endgame

WuWa is the cautionary tale NTE should study. It launched in May 2024 to serious performance and story-pacing complaints, then executed one of the genre's better redemption arcs, tightening optimisation and improving writing patch by patch, and now has a proven endgame cadence (Tower of Adversity and rotating challenge modes). NTE is at the start of that journey: reception is polarised, mobile optimisation and driving feel drew criticism, the story reportedly sags mid-way, and there was an AI-asset controversy. Its endgame is unproven.

Which should you play?

Choose Wuthering Waves if combat feel is your priority and you value a game that has already earned back trust. Choose NTE if you want the urban sandbox, driving and housing, plus the friendliest gacha of the two, while accepting it still has to prove it can sustain players the way WuWa eventually did.

The verdict

Choose Wuthering Waves if combat mechanics and skill expression matter most and you want a proven, finely-tuned action game. Choose NTE for the sheer breadth of its urban sandbox and the friendliest pulls around, accepting that its combat is shallower and its performance heavier.
