World of Tanks: HEAT beginner's guide: your first matches

Roles, the three free Agents, the modes and the currencies — everything you need to stop feeding and start winning.

World of Tanks: HEAT is a hero shooter with tanks, so the fastest way to improve is to understand the three roles and pick the right Agent for the job.

Learn the three roles

  • Defender — holds objectives and soaks pressure. Start with Chopper, a free, forgiving Defender who gets tougher as he takes damage.
  • Assault — deals damage and takes space. Start with Kent, a free Assault whose reload speeds up as he lands hits.
  • Marksman — picks targets from range. Start with Hound, a free Marksman who highlights enemy weak points.

These three are handed to you at launch, one per role, and playing all of them is the best crash course in the game.

Know the modes

  • Hardpoint (5v5) — a moving control point; first to the score cap wins.
  • Control (5v5) — capture a single zone, best of three rounds.
  • Kill Confirmed (5v5) — collect tokens from downed enemies to score.
  • Conquest (10v10) — multiple bases on a large map.

Understand the currencies

You will earn Credits (buy vehicles and customisation), Tech (buy vehicle modules), Intel (Battle Pass progression) and premium HEAT-Coins. Vehicles level up to 25, unlocking modules as you go.

Five quick tips

  1. Play the objective — kills rarely win these modes on their own.
  2. Learn one Agent per role before you branch out.
  3. Save your ultimate for a contested point, not a random skirmish.
  4. Level a vehicle to unlock its modules before judging it.
  5. The Battle Pass is earnable by playing, so you never need to pay to progress.
