Marvel Rivals beginner guide: roles, objectives and first heroes

How to avoid the usual new-player trap: locking damage every round and ignoring why the fight is being lost.

Marvel Rivals looks chaotic at first, but the fundamentals are straightforward once you read it as a role-based objective shooter.

  • Start with role balance. A stable team usually needs a frontline Vanguard, two or three Duelists, and enough Strategist healing to survive enemy ultimates.
  • Play the objective first. Chasing eliminations away from the convoy or control area loses rounds even when your damage numbers look good.
  • Learn two heroes per role. One main is not enough. Patches, bans and Team-Up needs will force swaps.
  • Track ultimates. Most team fights are decided by who spends first and who has a defensive answer ready.
  • Use destructible cover. Walls and sightlines can change mid-fight. Break cover to open angles, or move when your own cover disappears.
  • Do not ignore Team-Ups. A good Team-Up can add mobility, burst or sustain that changes a matchup.
