This is the closest thing to a family feud on the list. State of Survival is published under the FunPlus umbrella, the same company behind Tiles Survive, so the two share DNA: zombie apocalypse, a rebuilt settlement, hero collection, alliances and open-map PvP. What separates them is age, tone and how hard the monetisation bites.
Gameplay & combat
State of Survival, built by KingsGroup and live since 2019, is a mature 4X war game. You build and defend a base, research tech, train troops and expand territory, and the headline draw over the years has been its crossovers, Rambo and The Walking Dead content, plus side modes like the Survival Royale minigame. Combat is the standard rally-and-march affair resolved by troop tiers and hero skills. Tiles Survive covers the same survival management beats, job assignment, shelter upgrades, hero recruitment, but front-loads a tile-by-tile exploration layer: you expand into fogged biomes, each new tile offering resources, a fight or survivors to save. In short, State of Survival is a war game with a survival theme; Tiles Survive is a survival-and-exploration game that eventually turns into a war game.
Progression & monetisation
State of Survival's biggest and most consistent criticism is that it is brutal to free players. The core loop is inherently PvP, you can be attacked more or less any time, and staying competitive at the top is widely described as a four-figure-per-week habit, with users citing $1000+ weekly to keep pace among the whales. Tiles Survive is not a charity, its alliance warfare and ranked events plainly favour spenders too, but as a newer title it is currently more generous to F2P in the PvE track. Its tile chapters, shelter and story content are fully playable without paying.
- State of Survival strengths: years of content, big IP crossovers, huge established alliances, a battle-hardened meta.
- Tiles Survive strengths: fresher exploration hook, softer early F2P curve, less accumulated power-creep to catch up on.
- Shared caveat: both are FunPlus-style live-service grinders; expect timers, offers and pressure to spend once PvP heats up.
Content & endgame
State of Survival wins on sheer volume and social infrastructure, seven-plus years of events, seasons and a settled competitive hierarchy. That is also its trap: joining now means slotting in behind veterans who have spent for years. Tiles Survive's endgame is thinner and unproven, but the server landscape is younger, so a new player has a more realistic shot at mattering.
Which should you play?
If you crave a deep, established war game and don't mind either whaling or accepting a support role, State of Survival delivers. If the tile-exploration novelty appeals and you'd rather start on a level-ish playing field, Tiles Survive is the pick, just go in clear-eyed that it is newer, less balanced at the top, and heavily marketed with misleading ads.
