The difference is the project you take on
Both games put ships and other players in space, but that shared image is not enough to make them substitutes. DarkOrbit gives a new pilot an immediate equipment project. EVE’s official Academy instead asks players to consider career paths such as explorer, industrialist, enforcer and soldier of fortune. Decide which sort of question you want the next session to answer.
Choose an evening, not an imagined endgame
If your ideal evening is a sequence of hunts that pays for a more useful combat fit, DarkOrbit is a direct starting point. If you want to investigate different professions and find a player organisation around one of them, begin with EVE’s Academy material. Neither choice removes the need to learn equipment and ask other players useful questions.
Our comparison concerns the documented structure, not a claim that one game has the larger population, fairer economy or stronger current meta. Try the opening activity you would actually repeat, then judge whether the surrounding progression makes it more interesting.
