ABI vs The Cycle: Frontier

The Cycle: Frontier is less a live rival than a cautionary tale, a slick, free-to-play PvPvE extraction shooter that was shut down in 2023 after cheaters and a shrinking population overwhelmed its good design. Comparing it to ABI is really about whether ABI can avoid the fate that killed the last major F2P extraction game.

ABI vs The Cycle: Frontier
AspectABIThe Cycle: FrontierEdge
Realism & difficultyGrounded military-realism extraction with hardcore gear-loss stakes and a bot-buffered learning curve.A lighter sci-fi PvPvE loop with monsters and players on an alien planet, more accessible but less milsim.Tie
Gunplay, ballistics & armorWeighty, detailed armor and penetration systems that make firefights tense and deliberate.Enjoyable, snappier arcade-leaning gunplay with lighter armor systems and creature threats mixed in.ABI
Maps & extractionPurpose-built raid maps with clear, readable extracts and steady raid pacing.Atmospheric alien maps where storms, monsters and other players created memorable tension around evac.Tie
Economy & lootA deeper trader, marketplace and insurance economy with strong stash management.A well-liked quest-and-crafting loot economy that many considered one of its genuine strengths.ABI
Progression & wipesLive seasonal wipes and an actively updated progression path.Ran seasonal content until the servers were shut down in September 2023, ending all progression permanently.ABI
Monetisation (F2P vs buy-in)Free with an intrusive shop and paid storage, the exact monetization tension players fear could bite it.Free with battle passes and cosmetics, a model that couldn't sustain the game once the population cratered.Tie
Performance & anti-cheatSolid optimization plus kernel-level ACE anti-cheat, the defense The Cycle fatally lacked.Rampant, poorly-controlled cheating was a primary reason the game bled players and ultimately closed.ABI

The verdict

There's no choosing The Cycle: Frontier, it's offline, and that's the point. It's the benchmark for how a good free-to-play extraction shooter dies: cheaters and monetization fatigue. ABI is the clear pick as a living game, and its stronger anti-cheat is the main reason to believe it can outlast the cautionary tale The Cycle left behind.
