World of Tanks: HEAT is the boldest thing Wargaming has done with its tanks in years. Instead of another historical sim, it reimagines the franchise as a hero shooter: you play as named Agents, each with a passive, an active ability and an ultimate, split across three roles — Defender, Assault and Marksman — and fight in short, objective-driven PvP.
What it does well
The pace is the star. Matches are quick and readable, the role trinity is easy to grasp for anyone coming from Overwatch or Valorant, and the sci-fi alternate-history styling gives the tanks a bright, heightened look that is a world away from the mainline game's realism. 5v5 modes like Hardpoint, Control and Kill Confirmed keep fights tight, while 10v10 Conquest scales the chaos up. It is free, it cross-plays across PC, console and cloud, and it carries cross-progression everywhere.
Where it stumbles
Reception has been genuinely split. HEAT holds a 71 Metascore and sits at Mixed on Steam — around half of reviews positive as of August 2026, with the recent trend dipping. Players are divided over balance, over the free-to-play economy, and over how far the game strays from the tank combat they knew. As a new live service it is still tuning Agents and prices in public.
Verdict
If "hero shooter, but the heroes are tanks" sounds fun, HEAT delivers exactly that, and it costs nothing to try. Go in expecting a young game still finding its balance rather than a finished, polished product — and start with the three free Agents before you spend anything.
