Arknights: Endfield vs Arknights

This is the family matchup: Endfield is Hypergryph's 3D action-RPG spin-off of its own hit 2D tower-defense strategy game, sharing the Terra/Talos universe but almost none of the moment-to-moment gameplay. The original Arknights is one of the most respected, F2P-friendly gachas around, which sets a high bar for its ambitious younger sibling.

Same universe, different game

Endfield is a spin-off, not a sequel, and the distinction matters. It's set on the planet Talos-II, 152 years after Terrans first arrived, and while veteran players will spot lore threads and familiar faces, you do not need to have played Arknights to follow it. The connective tissue is tone, factions and world-building — not a continuous plot. Crucially, the two play nothing alike.

Gameplay & combat

Original Arknights is a 2D strategic tower defense. You spend Deployment Points to place operators on a grid, use melee units to block enemy lanes, position ranged and support units behind them, then largely watch the plan execute — skill timing and squad composition are everything, and it's deep, cerebral and famously demanding on harder stages. Arknights: Endfield throws that format out entirely. It's a 3D real-time RPG where you directly control a four-operator squad, dodge, aim, target weak points and Interrupt bosses mid-cast. You're inside the fight, not hovering above it.

On top of combat, Endfield adds the AIC (Automated Industrial Complex) — a Factorio-lite base builder with conveyors, power grids and automated production — plus open-world (if somewhat restrictive) exploration. Original Arknights has none of that; its meta-game is the beloved base/dormitory management, roster planning and clearing tower-defense content. One is a strategy game you solve; the other is an action-RPG-sim hybrid you pilot.

Progression & monetisation

  • Arknights: 2% base rate for 6-stars (high for the genre), pity that begins ramping at 50 pulls, and a 300-pull spark on limited banners — widely regarded as one of the more player-friendly gachas, helped by low power-creep and a design where duplicates aren't mandatory.
  • Endfield: 0.8% for 6-star operators, soft pity ~65, hard pity 80, 120-pull limited guarantee. Lower headline rate, and as a much newer, more expensive-to-produce 3D title its economy is still being judged.

Which should you play?

Play the original Arknights if you love tight tactical puzzles, a gorgeous 2D art style, a massive existing roster and one of the most respected F2P economies around — all on modest hardware. Play Arknights: Endfield if you want to experience that same universe as a hands-on 3D action RPG with a factory-building twist, and you're comfortable with a newer game that's still filling out its content. Fans of the setting will enjoy both; fans of tower defense specifically should know Endfield keeps the world but abandons the genre.

The verdict

Stick with Arknights if you love tight tactical strategy, want maximum generosity, or play on modest hardware, since it remains a gold-standard F2P experience. Jump to Arknights: Endfield if you want to explore the same universe through real-time action and deep automation, accepting that it must still prove its economy and staying power.
