Tiles Survive vs Frostborn

These two share a survival theme but sit in different sub-genres, which is exactly why players torn between them ask for a comparison. Tiles Survive is a top-down 4X strategy game about commanding a settlement, while Frostborn is Kefir's Norse action-RPG where you directly control a character in real-time co-op survival and lootable PvP.

Frostborn and Tiles Survive both wear the "survival" label, but they are barely the same medium. Tiles Survive is a tap-and-wait strategy builder you can dip into during a coffee break; Frostborn (Kefir), now branded as an Action RPG after starting life as "Coop Survival," is a hands-on, real-time survival RPG where your thumbs, not your build timers, decide whether you live.

Gameplay & combat

Tiles Survive is abstract and top-down: you clear fogged tiles, assign survivors to jobs like hunter or lumberjack, route electricity to speed production, and let hero skills auto-resolve fights. Frostborn is a Norse-mythology co-op sandbox with proper action combat. You control a single Viking in real time, dodge and swing, switch between three main classes and their subclasses on the fly to fit the encounter, run dungeons and shrines for tiered loot, and raid other players' actual bases. It is the more skill-driven, adrenal experience; Tiles Survive is the more relaxed, systems-driven one.

Progression & monetisation

The two games punish you in completely different ways. Tiles Survive's pressure is economic, alliance events and PvP brackets reward spenders, and the grind is measured in upgrade timers. Frostborn's pressure is visceral. Equipment has durability and degrades, so gear you earned can literally break, and the open PvP zones are infamous for high-level players ganking and "bullying" newcomers before they can gather. Frostborn is genuinely not newbie-friendly, and while it leans less on whale-tier spending than the 4X titles, it is still a grind-heavy game with its own pay elements.

  • Choose Frostborn if: you want real-time combat, class-swapping builds, co-op raids and PvP where your reflexes matter.
  • Choose Tiles Survive if: you want a passive, manage-from-anywhere base-builder that doesn't demand active defence of your loot.
  • Reality check: Frostborn's durability loss and newbie-ganking frustrate many players; Tiles Survive's ads misrepresent what is really a slow strategy game.

Content & endgame

Frostborn's endgame is about gear, dungeons and territorial raiding, a loot-and-conflict loop that rewards a coordinated squad and punishes solo casuals. Tiles Survive's endgame is alliance warfare and event ranking layered over collectible hero investment, all resolved through menus rather than manual play. Frostborn asks for scheduled group sessions; Tiles Survive tolerates being checked a few times a day.

Which should you play?

Pick by appetite for risk and involvement. Frostborn is for players who want the tension of a survival RPG where a raid can wipe your progress and skill decides fights, and who can stomach a hostile early game. Tiles Survive suits players who prefer strategy over dexterity and don't want their stuff stolen while they sleep. As a roughly one-year-old title, Tiles Survive is also the less proven of the two, and the two scratch such different itches that many players will simply prefer one genre outright.

The verdict

These scratch genuinely different itches. Choose Frostborn for hands-on, high-stakes action survival with true co-op and the thrill (and risk) of lootable PvP. Choose Tiles Survive for a calmer, strategic base-building and alliance 4X you command rather than physically fight. The deciding question is whether you want to swing the sword yourself or direct the whole war.
