Star Trek Fleet Command vs EVE Echoes

This is the classic themepark-versus-sandbox debate in mobile space MMOs. Fleet Command offers a guided, licensed 4X experience with clear objectives and base progression, while EVE Echoes is a mobile port of EVE Online's brutal, player-driven open universe. One holds your hand; the other hands you a sandbox and walks away.

This is the connoisseur's comparison: two mobile space-MMOs that both promise a living galaxy, but with very different DNA. Star Trek Fleet Command is a Scopely 4X wrapped in Trek IP, streamlined for accessibility. EVE Echoes is NetEase and CCP's mobile port of the notoriously deep, sandbox, player-driven universe of EVE Online. If STFC is a guided theme park, EVE Echoes is closer to the open ocean.

Gameplay & combat

STFC uses a top-down star map where you send ships to nodes, grind hostiles, and fight in largely automated, stat-driven battles decided by ship type triangles and officer buffs. EVE Echoes puts you inside a single ship in a 3D solar system, warping between gates, orbiting targets, managing capacitor, modules, and ammo in real time. Echoes rewards ship fitting knowledge, manual piloting and situational awareness; STFC rewards roster optimisation and logistics. Crucially, Echoes has genuine open-world danger: null-sec space is lawless, and you can be ambushed and lose an expensively fitted ship permanently.

Progression & monetisation

  • STFC: base-building, ship tiers, timer-gated upgrades, and shard collection. Spend accelerates everything; it's a fairly typical aggressive mobile economy.
  • EVE Echoes: skill training runs on real-time queues (inherited from EVE), and the economy is largely player-made via a real market, industry and mining. You can buy the premium 'Omega' clone and PLEX-style items, but wealth is earned through gameplay and trade more than shard packs.

Echoes' loss-based stakes make it feel weightier; STFC is safer moment-to-moment but pushes monetisation harder around progression walls.

Content & endgame

EVE Echoes' endgame is the sandbox itself: corporations, sovereignty over null-sec regions, industrial supply chains, market speculation, and large fleet fights that echo EVE Online's legendary battles. It is intimidating and information-dense, with a famously steep learning curve. STFC's endgame is more curated: ship progression into the millions of power, armadas, alliance territory events and franchise-themed arcs. STFC is easier to pick up and clearer about what to do next; Echoes gives you a genuinely emergent economy but expects you to find your own goals.

Which should you play?

Choose EVE Echoes if you want depth, real risk, manual combat and a player-driven economy, and you don't mind a punishing on-ramp. Choose STFC if you want the Star Trek fantasy, a gentler curve, and structured live-service content. The honest caveat: STFC is the more polished, IP-driven package but also the more openly monetised and less strategically deep; Echoes offers more emergent gameplay but far less hand-holding and a UI that overwhelms newcomers.

The verdict

Choose Star Trek Fleet Command if you want an accessible, licensed strategy MMO with clear goals and a friendly on-ramp. Go with EVE Echoes if you crave deep, consequential sandbox gameplay, real piloting and a player-driven economy, and you don't mind a punishing learning curve. EVE is the more respected 'real' spaceship game; Fleet Command is the more welcoming one.
