This matchup pits two of mobile's biggest licensed live-service games against each other, but they're different genres wearing famous costumes. Star Trek Fleet Command is a real-time 4X space-strategy MMO; Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes (SWGoH), by Capital Games/EA, is a turn-based character-collection RPG. They compete for the same 'iconic sci-fi fan with a phone' audience more than for the same style of play.
Gameplay & combat
STFC is about the galaxy map: build a base, tier ships, mine resources, and fight semi-automated battles governed by ship-type counters and officer abilities, often while you're offline. SWGoH is about the squad: you collect characters, build 5-unit teams, and fight tactical turn-based battles where ability cooldowns, turn order, synergies and 'kits' matter enormously. SWGoH's combat is more hands-on and puzzle-like in PvP (the Grand Arena meta is famously deep); STFC's is more about long-term logistics and positioning on a shared map with genuine open-world PvP raiding.
Progression & monetisation
- STFC: ship tiers, blueprint shards, and timer-gated base upgrades; aggressive packs and event FOMO.
- SWGoH: character shard farming, gear (the infamous 'gear crunch'), relics, and mods. Notorious for very long farm times and gated 'Galactic Legend' characters that can take months or heavy spending.
Both are premier examples of demanding licensed economies. SWGoH's pain is the endless gear/shard grind per character; STFC's pain is timers and losing resources to other players. Neither is kind to a strict free-to-play timeline at the top tier.
Content & endgame
SWGoH is a mature, deeply supported game with years of content: Grand Arena Championships, Territory Wars, Territory Battles, Raids, and Conquest, plus a constant drip of new characters spanning the films and shows. Its endgame is roster depth and PvP ladder mastery. STFC's endgame is territory, armadas, ship power into the millions, and alliance warfare, with regular Trek-themed arcs. SWGoH is the more established, content-dense product; STFC offers a more social, persistent-world sandbox.
Which should you play?
Choose SWGoH if you want tactical, turn-based team-building, a colossal character roster, and competitive PvP ladders, and you can stomach a long grind. Choose STFC if you prefer real-time strategy, base-building and a living shared galaxy with an active alliance. The honest note: these barely scratch the same itch. SWGoH is a collector-tactician's game; STFC is a strategist-logistician's game. Pick by the loop you enjoy, and by whether you'd rather grind characters or manage a growing fleet.
