Star Trek Fleet Command vs Star Trek Timelines

Both are officially licensed Star Trek mobile titles, but they scratch very different itches: Fleet Command is a real-time 4X MMO built around base-building, fleets and open-galaxy PvP, while Timelines is a stat-driven collection RPG that spans every era of the franchise. If you want strategy and rivalry, one wins; if you want to collect the biggest cast in Trek history, the other does.

Star Trek Fleet Command vs Star Trek Timelines
AspectSTFCStar Trek TimelinesEdge
Core gameplayA real-time 4X MMO where you upgrade a starbase, build and tier ships, and fight hostiles and players across a shared galaxy map.A collection RPG built on stat-based ship arena battles, away-team skill checks and idle Voyages rather than territory control.Star Trek Fleet Command
Trek fan service & rosterFocuses mostly on TOS and Kelvin-timeline ships and officers, with newer TNG/DS9/Discovery content added over time.Boasts 700+ collectible crew spanning every series and film, including deep-cut and alternate-timeline characters.Star Trek Timelines
ProgressionLong ops-level and ship-tier grind gated by resource mining and research trees that keep expanding.Crew leveling, fusing duplicate stars, faction rep and equipment 'immortalizing' with heavy RNG on drops.Tie
Monetization & generosityNotoriously whale-oriented; competitive relevance and faster ships often demand real spending on packs and events. Also aggressively monetized with gacha crew pulls, but slightly more of the roster is reachable through play.Star Trek Timelines
F2P-friendlinessFree players can enjoy early game but hit hard walls and PvP disadvantages at higher ops levels.More forgiving for free players since much progress is single-player Voyages and events, not open PvP.Star Trek Timelines
Content & endgameSteady stream of arcs, territory captures, alliance wars and new star systems keeps the endgame active.Endgame is Gauntlet, Voyages and recurring themed events; content is broad but more repetitive in loop.Star Trek Fleet Command
Platform & longevityRuns on mobile plus an official PC client, with a large active playerbase and frequent updates since 2018.Available on mobile, Steam and Facebook; long-running since 2016 but with a smaller, more niche community.Star Trek Fleet Command

These two games chase the same Trek-loving audience from opposite ends. Star Trek Fleet Command (STFC) is a live, map-based 4X MMO strategy game built by Scopely, where you build a starbase, mine resources, and fight in real time across a shared galaxy. Star Trek Timelines, originally from Disruptor Beam and now run by Tilting Point, is a character-collecting RPG that leans hard on the deep-cut cast of every series and film. If you want the franchise's people, Timelines wins; if you want the franchise's ships and conflict, STFC wins.

Gameplay & combat

STFC is classic mobile 4X: you position ships on a persistent star map, hit hostiles and other players' ships, and manage a base that can be attacked while you sleep. Combat resolves through a rock-paper-scissors of Interceptors, Explorers and Battleships, plus officer synergies. Timelines is turn-free in the same sense but very different in feel: you assemble away teams and starship crews, and the core loop is stat-gating puzzles (each mission node demands a skill like Command, Diplomacy or Security above a threshold) and voyages where your crew's endurance ticks down over hours. There is no live PvP invasion of your account in Timelines, which many players find far less stressful.

Progression & monetisation

  • STFC: aggressive, timer-and-shard economy. Ship blueprints, latinum, and speed-ups drive spending; competitive alliances effectively require it. Reputation for steep late-game paywalls.
  • Timelines: gacha crew pulls plus a heavy 'citizen'/'fusion' fuse-and-level system. Grindy but generous with free crew; monetisation is character packs and time-savers rather than base protection.

Both are free-to-play with real ceilings, but STFC's pain is losing ships and resources to other humans, while Timelines' pain is roster depth and event ranking.

Content & endgame

Timelines' selling point is breadth of canon: hundreds of variant crew spanning TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery and the films, with genuine voice and art fan-service. Its endgame is weekly events, faction reputation and 'Skirmish'/'Galaxy' event grinds. STFC's endgame is territory, ship tiers (into the millions of ship power), armadas, and alliance warfare with a genuinely social, guild-driven pull. STFC's live-service cadence and story arcs (Borg, the Kelvin timeline, TNG crews) keep adding systems.

Which should you play?

Pick Timelines if you're a lore obsessive who wants to collect the whole ensemble and play at your own pace with no fear of being raided. Pick STFC if you want tense, social, competitive strategy and the fantasy of commanding a growing fleet. Be honest about STFC's tradeoffs: it demands daily attention, an active alliance, and a tolerance for FOMO events. Timelines is the calmer, more single-player-friendly Trek fix; STFC is the louder, more demanding one.

The verdict

Pick Star Trek Fleet Command if you want a strategic, competitive MMO with alliances, base-building and real stakes on the galaxy map. Choose Star Trek Timelines if you're a lore-obsessed fan who wants to collect crew from every era and prefers a lower-pressure, more solo-friendly RPG. Both monetize hard, but Timelines is the gentler ride for free players.
