Raid: Shadow Legends vs Diablo Immortal

A cross-genre showdown that players still argue over: the gacha collector versus the action-RPG. Raid is a turn-based champion collector; Diablo Immortal is Blizzard's real-time hack-and-slash MMO-lite, infamous for its gear-gacha and whale economy.

Raid: Shadow Legends vs Diablo Immortal
AspectRAIDDiablo ImmortalEdge
Combat & gameplayTurn-based, team-driven combat with auto-battle support so you can grind passively or micromanage manually.Real-time action combat with click-to-kill skill rotations; visceral and hands-on, but grindy with no true auto-play.Tie
Progression modelCollect and level champions, gear them with artifacts, and build teams; power comes from roster breadth and gear tuning.Single-hero class progression driven by Paragon levels and the Legendary Gem system that gates real endgame power.Raid: Shadow Legends
MonetisationVery aggressive gacha and bundles, but F2P players can reach genuinely competitive PvE and even Arena teams.Widely condemned as one of the most predatory economies in gaming; maxing a character can cost five to six figures.Raid: Shadow Legends
F2P-friendlinessGrind-heavy but F2P-competitive; pity systems and farmable champions give patient players a real path forward.F2P can enjoy the campaign, but endgame PvP (Battlegrounds, Shadow War) is effectively pay-gated behind resonance.Raid: Shadow Legends
Content & endgameSprawling PvE endgame: Doom Tower, Hydra, Clan Boss, Faction Wars, plus daily and event churn.Rifts, Helliquary raids, warband activities, and a genuine MMO overworld with shared zones and events.Tie
Presentation & platformStylized 3D fantasy champions; runs well on mobile, PC via Plarium Play, and browser.AAA Diablo production values, atmosphere, and voice acting on mobile and PC, a clear graphical step above.Diablo Immortal
Community & longevityLarge marketing-fueled base (~150k daily) and steady updates, deeply invested in team-building meta.Backed by the Diablo IP and Blizzard's live-service cadence, though goodwill was damaged by its launch monetisation.Tie

This is a genre mismatch as much as a rivalry, and that's the whole point of comparing them. RAID: Shadow Legends (Plarium, 2018) is a turn-based hero-collector gacha. Diablo Immortal (Blizzard/NetEase, 2022) is a real-time action RPG — an isometric hack-and-slash MMO you happen to be able to play on a phone. If you want tactics and roster-building, versus twitch combat and loot showers, these games answer very different itches.

Gameplay & combat

RAID is deliberate: four-champion teams, turn meter, affinities, cleanses and buff/debuff chess on auto or manual. Diablo Immortal is kinetic — you pick one of several classes (Barbarian, Necromancer, Demon Hunter, etc.), run full Diablo-style zones and dungeons, dodge in real time and carpet the screen with legendaries. The moment-to-moment feel is where Immortal wins hands down; Blizzard's combat polish and audio-visual production are a tier above almost anything in the mobile RPG space. RAID wins if you'd rather out-think a fight than out-click it.

Progression & monetisation

Both are criticised for spending pressure, but they're criticised differently.

  • Diablo Immortal: notorious. You can't buy gear directly, but Legendary Gems — especially 5-star gems — gate real power (Resonance) behind crests and lockboxes, and maxing a character has been widely reported to cost tens of thousands of dollars. F2P players hit hard PvP and Paragon walls fast.
  • RAID: also slammed as pay-to-win and famous for saturation advertising, but the consensus is that F2P players can at least stay in the ballpark, earn meaningful champions, and enjoy the game without spending. The whale gap is smaller and more forgiving.

Content & endgame

Immortal offers MMO-style zones, Helliquary raids, Battlegrounds PvP and the server-politics of the Cycle of Strife and Shadow War. RAID offers Clan Boss, Doom Tower, Hydra, Faction Wars and Arena, built around collecting and optimising 900+ champions. Immortal's endgame is about one powered-up character; RAID's is about a deep, versatile roster.

Which should you play?

Play Diablo Immortal if you want AAA action combat, gorgeous production and a living MMO world — and either won't touch the shop or understand exactly what chasing gems costs. Play RAID: Shadow Legends if you want strategic team-building, a huge collectible roster and a monetisation model that, for all its noise, treats free players less brutally.

The verdict

Pick Diablo Immortal if you want AAA action combat, dark atmosphere, and an MMO overworld, and you either play purely F2P for the story or are prepared to spend heavily for competitive PvP. Pick Raid: Shadow Legends if you prefer strategic team-building, passive auto-grinding, and a genre where a patient free player can still stay competitive.
