Evony: The King's Return (Top Games, 2019) is impossible to discuss without its reputation preceding it: it is the game behind the infamous, misleading "pull the pin" and puzzle ads that Dexerto, GamesRadar and countless Reddit threads have mocked for years — mini-games that barely exist in the actual product. Underneath the bait-and-switch marketing sits a fairly conventional build-your-city SLG. Infinity Kingdom (Yotta Games, 2021) competes in the same 4X space but with a more honest pitch and a very different visual identity.
Gameplay & combat
Evony is classic city-builder 4X: construct your keep, train troops, research tech, recruit real historical generals (Washington, Lincoln, Genghis Khan) across selectable civilisations, and rally with your alliance. It does layer in a genuine puzzle mini-game and a monarch-competition metagame, but the strategic core is standard rally-and-reinforce warfare with no active troop control.
Infinity Kingdom differentiates with player-controlled Dragons and marches you can actively steer mid-movement, giving combat a more hands-on, arcade feel than Evony's set-and-forget rallies. Its Immortals fill the same role as Evony's generals but sit inside a cuter, more stylised presentation.
Progression & monetisation
- Art & tone: Evony is semi-realistic and generic-historical; Infinity Kingdom is bright, chibi, low-poly and far more distinctive.
- Monetisation: both are heavily pay-to-win. Evony has a particularly notorious whale-driven economy and relentless purchase prompts; Infinity Kingdom's paid-summon treadmill for top Immortals and dragon shards is aggressive but the game is younger with a lower ceiling.
- Trust: Evony carries real reputational baggage from its deceptive advertising, which colours community sentiment; Infinity Kingdom markets itself more straightforwardly, closer to what you actually play.
Content & endgame
Evony's advantage is scale and longevity: a large global player base, established alliances, server-vs-server warfare, and years of live-ops events. The systems are well understood and heavily guided online. Infinity Kingdom offers comparable cross-server server wars and seasonal events but with a smaller population and a thinner content back-catalogue — the trade-off of being the newer, less-established title.
Which should you play?
Pick Evony if you want the larger, more populated 4X with more entrenched alliances and don't mind — or can look past — its dishonest ad reputation and heavy monetisation. Pick Infinity Kingdom if you want a more visually distinctive, more honestly represented game with hands-on steerable combat and dragon mechanics that Evony simply doesn't offer. Bluntly: Infinity Kingdom is the more charming and truthful product, while Evony is the bigger, more battle-tested one. Neither respects a strict free-to-play budget at the competitive tier, so go in clear-eyed about spending either way.
