Once Human vs Fallout 76

This is the comparison players reach for most: two post-apocalyptic, PvE-leaning survival games where you loot a contaminated open world, build a portable base, and grind gear. Once Human is the free-to-play newcomer with eldritch monsters; Fallout 76 is the older Bethesda title that clawed its way back from a disastrous 2018 launch.

Once Human vs Fallout 76
AspectOHFallout 76Edge
Combat & gunplaySnappy looter-shooter feel with weapon mods, elemental status effects, and boss fights against grotesque 'Aberrant' monsters.Classic Fallout gunplay with VATS assist, but the shooting feels floatier and dated next to modern shooters.Once Human
World & atmosphereOriginal Lovecraftian setting where reality is warped by 'Stardust'; fresh but less iconic lore.Deep, beloved Fallout universe with Appalachia, holotapes, and decades of established lore and dark humor.Fallout 76
Progression & endgameSeasonal 'scenario' servers reset your progress every ~6 weeks, keeping things fresh but wiping your grind.Persistent characters you keep forever, with a long SPECIAL/perk-card build tree and expansions.Tie
Base buildingModular bases you can literally pack up and relocate across territories, plus creature-powered automation.Flexible C.A.M.P. building you can move, but with stricter budgets and object limits.Once Human
Monetisation & F2PFully free-to-play; monetization is cosmetic-focused (skins, battle pass) rather than pay-to-win.$40 buy-in plus an aggressive Atomic Shop and the $13/mo Fallout 1st subscription for QoL like scrap storage.Once Human
Content volumeGrowing but still young, with limited quest depth and repetitive mid-game loops.Years of expansions (Wastelanders, Steel Dawn, Skyline Valley) with full NPC questlines and voiced dialogue.Fallout 76
Community & longevityNew in 2024 with a strong launch (~230k Steam peak) but an unproven long tail.A famously wholesome, resilient player base that keeps growing years after launch.Fallout 76

On paper these two look like siblings: both are online, third-person-friendly post-apocalyptic survival games built around scavenging, crafting and personal base building. The difference is tone and structure. Fallout 76 is a persistent Bethesda RPG set in Appalachia that you buy once and keep forever; Once Human is a free-to-play NetEase live-service game wrapped in Lovecraftian cosmic horror, where the antagonists are warped Deviants rather than Super Mutants and ghouls.

Gameplay & combat

The core loop rhymes. You loot ruined towns, haul junk home, and build a CAMP-style base from a snap-together kit. But the moment-to-moment feel diverges. Fallout 76 keeps V.A.T.S., the SPECIAL system and perk cards, so builds are stat-and-perk driven and gunplay is famously floaty. Once Human is a straighter shooter with tighter recoil and weapon handling, layered with its Sanity mechanic — lingering in corrupted zones or catching diseases eats into your health pool until you rest or medicate, echoing how radiation nags at you in Appalachia. Once Human also folds in Deviations, collectible creature-helpers that fight, farm or power your base, which Fallout 76 has no equivalent for.

World & content

This is where Fallout 76 pulls ahead. Appalachia is hand-authored, dense with environmental storytelling, holotapes and years of added quests (Wastelanders, Steel Dawn, expeditions). Once Human's map is atmospheric and its horror set-pieces are genuinely striking, but critics and players consistently flag heavy asset reuse — the same silos, gas stations and enemy camps recur until monotony sets in. Once Human counters with its Seasonal Scenarios: story-driven servers with real narrative arcs, whereas Fallout 76's seasons mostly bolt cosmetics and small side-content onto a fixed world.

Progression & monetisation

  • Fallout 76: buy-to-play (frequently discounted). Optional Fallout 1st sub (~$13/month) unlocks private servers, the Scrapbox and a survival tent. The Atomic Shop is cosmetic-heavy but occasionally sells convenience.
  • Once Human: free to download, but monetised through a gacha-flavoured blueprint/cosmetic economy that drew criticism at launch, plus a battle pass. Nothing walls off the core campaign, yet the pull toward spending is more constant.
  • Wipes: Fallout 76 is permanent — your character persists indefinitely. Once Human's scenario servers reset roughly every six weeks, though you retain blueprints, cosmetics and can now bank progress in permanent modes.

Which should you play?

Pick Fallout 76 if you want a stable, story-rich RPG you own outright, with a world worth reading and a large, matured player base after the TV-show resurgence. Pick Once Human if you want a scarier, shooter-forward, free-to-try take with creature collecting and fresh seasonal restarts. Be honest with yourself about the wipes and the store: Once Human is the younger, still-evolving product, and its long-term shape is less proven than Bethesda's now-rehabilitated survivor.

The verdict

Pick Once Human if you want a free, modern-feeling looter-shooter with better gunplay and inventive base mechanics, and you don't mind seasonal resets. Pick Fallout 76 if you value a permanent character, rich Bethesda questing and lore, and a proven, friendly community, and you're okay paying up front and for QoL.
