ABI vs The Cycle: Frontier

The Cycle: Frontier is less a live rival than a cautionary tale, a slick, free-to-play PvPvE extraction shooter that was shut down in 2023 after cheaters and a shrinking population overwhelmed its good design. Comparing it to ABI is really about whether ABI can avoid the fate that killed the last major F2P extraction game.

ABI vs The Cycle: Frontier

Realism & difficultyGrounded military-realism extraction with hardcore gear-loss stakes and a bot-buffered learning curve.A lighter sci-fi PvPvE loop with monsters and players on an alien planet, more accessible but less milsim.Tie
Gunplay, ballistics & armorWeighty, detailed armor and penetration systems that make firefights tense and deliberate.Enjoyable, snappier arcade-leaning gunplay with lighter armor systems and creature threats mixed in.ABI
Maps & extractionPurpose-built raid maps with clear, readable extracts and steady raid pacing.Atmospheric alien maps where storms, monsters and other players created memorable tension around evac.Tie
Economy & lootA deeper trader, marketplace and insurance economy with strong stash management.A well-liked quest-and-crafting loot economy that many considered one of its genuine strengths.ABI

A living game versus a cautionary tale

Comparing Arena Breakout: Infinite (ABI) to The Cycle: Frontier is really a comparison across time. Yager's The Cycle: Frontier was a free-to-play PvEvP extraction shooter that launched in 2022 and shut its servers down in September 2023 — so this matchup is less "which should you play" and more "what ABI can learn from a beloved game that died." You cannot play The Cycle: Frontier today; ABI is very much alive and one of the genre's most-watched newcomers.

Gameplay & setting

The two feel worlds apart. The Cycle: Frontier was sci-fi prospecting on the alien planet Fortuna III — you dropped in to mine resources, complete faction quests for Korolev, ICA and Osiris, fight roaming monsters and other prospectors, and extract before deadly storms rolled in. Its PvEvP tension came as much from the environment and creatures as from players, and its lower gun-realism, brighter tone and objective-driven runs made it more approachable than the milsim crowd. ABI is the grounded opposite: modern-military realism, plate armor, ballistic penetration and Tarkov-style gear fear on real-world-styled maps.

  • The Cycle: Frontier (defunct): sci-fi PvEvP, creature threats, prospecting loops, faction reputation, approachable gunplay — a genre-broadening experiment.
  • ABI (live): hardcore military realism, deep gear economy, polished UE combat, active development and playerbase.

Why The Cycle's fate matters

The Cycle: Frontier's closure is the ghost that haunts every free-to-play extraction shooter, ABI included. It struggled with a persistent cheating problem, monetisation and progression decisions that frustrated its community, and a player count that could not sustain a live-service economy. It was well-liked by the people who stuck with it, but "well-liked by a shrinking core" is not enough to keep servers on. That is the exact failure pattern ABI has to avoid.

What ABI must prove

ABI enters with real advantages The Cycle lacked: Tencent's resources, a strong anti-cheat reputation in its first year, a proven mobile predecessor, and gorgeous production values. But it shares the same existential risks — free-to-play monetisation that must stay fair enough to keep players trusting it, and a live population large enough to sustain matchmaking and an economy long-term. Persistent pay-to-win accusations are precisely the kind of trust erosion that helped hollow out The Cycle.

Which should you play?

By default, ABI, because The Cycle: Frontier no longer exists to play. But keep The Cycle in mind as the genre's most instructive obituary: a genuinely creative extraction shooter that lost its players anyway. ABI is better-resourced and better-defended, yet unproven over the long haul — and The Cycle is the reminder that in this genre, launch polish means little without a fair economy and a durable community behind it.

The verdict

There's no choosing The Cycle: Frontier, it's offline, and that's the point. It's the benchmark for how a good free-to-play extraction shooter dies: cheaters and monetization fatigue. ABI is the clear pick as a living game, and its stronger anti-cheat is the main reason to believe it can outlast the cautionary tale The Cycle left behind.
